Provide advice and input into family, domestic and sexual violence policy development including through the development of the standalone First Nations National Plan for family safety; Our Ways - Strong Ways - Our Voices: National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Plan to End Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence (Our Ways - Strong Ways - Our Voices).
This activity is part of a broader activity to embed Priority Reform One of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap (Closing the Gap) in informing policies and solutions on family, domestic and sexual violence through working in genuine partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Implementation progress update
The Our Ways - Strong Ways - Our Voices Steering Committee (Steering Committee) was established on 15 January 2024 to guide the development of Our Ways - Strong Ways - Our Voices. The Steering Committee is co-chaired by a First Nations representative and a representative from the Department of Social Services. The Steering Committee has lead the development and drafting of Our Ways - Strong Ways - Our Voices, through 9 meetings from January 2024 to February 2025. Consultation to develop Our Ways – Strong Ways – Our Voices included a public submission process that ran from 5 September 2024 to 4 November 2024. Other engagements occurred alongside these between September 2024 and March 2025. They included PhotoYarn engagements with children and young people exploring what safety meant to them.
