Activity details

Work with the Women and Women’s Safety Ministerial Council to meet Target 13 of Closing the Gap: to reduce all forms of family violence and abuse against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children at least by 50%, as progress toward zero.

This activity is part of a broader activity to embed Priority Reform One of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap in informing policies and solutions on family, domestic and sexual violence. It is doing this through working together in genuine partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Council on family, domestic and sexual violence.

Implementation progress update

The Women and Women’s Safety Ministerial Council has met 7 times since it was established on 30 September 2022 and 30 June 2025.

All meetings have focused on addressing and ending all forms of violence against all women and children, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children.

On 22 November 2024, all Ministers agreed on the need to address the disproportionate levels of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children. Ministers were provided an update on the development of Australia’s first dedicated First Nations National Plan, now known as Our Ways - Strong Ways - Our Voices: National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Plan to End Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence (Our Ways - Strong Ways - Our Voices). The Women and Women’s Safety Ministerial Council reaffirmed its commitment to delivering Our Ways - Strong Ways - Our Voices, to sit alongside the National Plan.
