Activity details
Trial a pilot program to provide culturally appropriate support to Aboriginal families through a partnership called Kumangka. This program will comprise an integrated whole-of-family response providing holistic support through an intensive, long-term, cultural healing and recovery program. The partnership aims to meet the cultural and service needs of Aboriginal families by working towards the National Agreement on Closing the Gap Target 13 and the Priority Reforms.
Implementation progress update
Starting in June 2023, Kumangka 'Together' delivers a whole-of-family approach to recovery and healing support for Aboriginal families who are experiencing or have experienced domestic, family and sexual violence (FDSV).
The partnership has men's, women's and children's practitioners who deliver culturally appropriate client-led services tailored to the family structure. The partnership also has a shared National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) practitioner to provide direct support to families and build the knowledge capacity of practitioners around the NDIS. The approach includes a holistic family response that focuses on long-term healing and recovery that prioritises safety, culture, addressing trauma and underlying causes of harmful behaviour, and connecting to ongoing support. The program is collaboratively delivered by the Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations Kornar Winmil Yunti Aboriginal Corporation, and First Nations Healing Incorporated.
Kumangka has been extended to 30 June 2027. For more information on Kumangka see First Nations Healing and KWY Aboriginal Corporation.
