Activity details

Providing $19.6 million over 3 years (from 2025-26) to extend current specialised and trauma-informed services for victim-survivors of sexual violence. Through a pilot of a new legal service model for victims and survivors of sexual assault nationally, and expand the pilot services to include trialling new non-legal services recommended by the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) including culturally-safe Justice System Navigators and supporting access to restorative justice pathways.

This activity is part of a broader activity to embed trauma-informed and culturally safe response models to support victims and survivors through the family court and justice systems.

Implementation progress update

On 6 March 2025, the Attorney-General issued a media release, announcing an initial response to the ALRC's report into justice responses to sexual violence, including funding for a national expansion of current specialised trauma-informed legal services pilots and to trial some non-legal services recommended by the ALRC. The media release can be found here: Albanese Government strengthening support for victims and survivors in the justice system

Pilots will provide specialised and trauma-informed legal services to victims and survivors of sexual violence, supporting them to participate in the justice system, guided by their own goals in their journey of recovery.

States and territories have been invited to submit proposals for the national expansion of the specialised and trauma informed legal services pilots. Once the successful proposals have been selected, formal negotiations to enter into Federated Funding Agreements will commence.
