The program provides frontline and supporting services with support to build their capacity to recognise, respond and refer those using violence and those experiencing or at risk of experiencing family, domestic and sexual violence in disaster situations.

This activity is delivered by Gender and Disaster Recovery Program (GADAus) and is part of a broader activity to support workforces to access training and information to build their ability to deliver evidence‑based and trauma-informed services to victim‑survivors and perpetrators.

Implementation progress update

Gender and Disaster Australia (GADAus), through the Gender and Disaster Recovery program, delivers training and resources to frontline responders and service providers to better support the safety of women and children at risk of violence when disasters strike.

GADAus delivers the Lessons in Disaster (LIDs) training for first responders and service providers to assist them to recognise and respond to family and domestic violence, challenge harmful gender stereotypes and inequalities, and understand their relevance in a disaster context. Training includes sessions on harmful gender stereotypes in disaster, family violence, men’s self-harm and suicide, and LGBTIQA+ inclusion.

GADAus also offers the Train the Trainer (TTT) program to experienced trainers and facilitators interested in delivering the LIDs program.

In 2024-25, 454 individual participants completed all 4 LID sessions and were counted in the official target numbers. Combined with this reporting period total, GADAus has trained a total of 704 participants who have completed all four sessions within the full Activity Work Plan period.

268 individual participants registered and attended LID sessions.

250 individual participants completed all 4 LIDs sessions and are counted in the official target numbers.
