Activity details

Through the Keeping Women Safe in their Homes (KWSITH) program, the Australian Government funds state and territory governments, and select non-government providers, to deliver services to improve the safety of women and their children who have experienced family and domestic violence.

KWSITH activities vary by jurisdiction and include risk assessments, safety planning and the provision of home security upgrades including alarms, security screens and locks. Activities also include the use of technologies such as monitored personal safety devices, surveillance cameras, dashboard cameras, electronic sweeping and de-bugging of homes and cars.

The KWSITH program can help to prevent homelessness by offering greater housing stability for women experiencing violence and providing an alternative to homeless shelters and emergency accommodation. This can also help to reduce the strain on emergency accommodation providers.

Implementation progress update

KWSITH has been funded since 2015-16. The Australian Government has committed $76.57 million total, including $41.72 million through the 2022-23 October Budget from 2022-23 to 2026-27.

KWSITH supports are available in every state and territory. For the majority of states and territories, the KWSITH initiative has been integrated into pre-existing Safe at Home initiatives. As a result, the range of supports available can vary by state and territory.

Since the program’s inception through to 30 June 2025, services have been delivered to approximately 29,000 women and their children.

An independent evaluation of the KWSITH program is due to commence in 2025-26.
