Activity details
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is developing the Criminal Justice Data Asset which will draw together data from the administrative systems of state and territory criminal justice agencies – including data about police recorded offenders, criminal court defendants and adult prisoners under the authority of corrective services. The ABS anticipates approved policy analysts and researchers will be able to access the Criminal Justice Data Asset from mid-2026 to undertake analyses to understand aspects of criminal behaviour. This funding also supports the on-going production and maintenance of victims and perpetrators of family and domestic violence data within existing national ABS administrative collections.
Implementation progress update
The ABS has completed a Privacy Impact Assessment to consider the privacy implications of integrating the criminal justice administrative data and assess and address any privacy related risks of the project which is available at ABS - Privacy Impact Assessments.
The ABS is currently formalising data sharing arrangements with state and territory criminal justice agencies and developing data governance processes for approved users to access the linked data safely. The ABS anticipates approved policy analysts and researchers will be able to access the Criminal Justice Data Asset from mid-2026 to undertake analyses to understand aspects of criminal behaviour.
