Activity details
The Crimes Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 was passed by the Legislative Assembly and notified on 19 April 2024. It amends the Juries Act 1967 to introduce a majority verdicts scheme, which will permit 11 of 12 jurors to find a person guilty of a Territory offence in circumstances where the court considers the jury is not likely to reach a unanimous verdict. The amendment will protect victims of crime by reducing the likelihood that they will be required to provide evidence, be cross-examined and live through the potentially traumatic experience of a trial more than once in circumstances where there is evidence that the majority of the jury (11 or 12 jurors) consider that the offence was committed beyond reasonable doubt.
