Implementation progress update

The Australian Government provided $6.5 million in the 2024‑25 budget to fund the development of a trial. Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) progressed the various elements of the trial, which included establishing a Cross-Government Working Group, procurements on consumer research and the technology assessment.

DITRDCA also coordinated a series of stakeholder roundtables, which include youth, parents and community organisations.

The trial assessed more than 60 technologies from 48 age assurance vendors, and spanned a range of approaches including age verification, age estimation, age inference.

The trial concluded that age assurance can be done in Australia and there are no substantial technical barriers to implementation.
