International Day of People with Disability(Opens external website) (IDPwD) is on 3 December.
This day aims to promote awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. There are 5.5 million people with disability in Australia – that’s 1 in 5 people. By recognising this day, we can all work together to help break down barriers.
In Australia, IDPwD is a joint effort between governments, schools, organisations and individuals. We value including people with disability in the workforce. We improve job outcomes and share resources, tools and training for:
- people with disability
- employers
- service providers.
That’s why we have announced Inclusive Employment Australia. It’s a new specialist disability employment program. It provides more support, tailored services and stronger accountability.
The program helps people with disability, injury or health condition to prepare for, find and maintain work and grow their career. Service providers can tailor their support to each person’s needs, goals and work capacity. The program also helps employers by giving them expert advice on recruitment and workplace practices.
Service providers can access a new online hub called the Centre for Inclusive Employment(Opens external website). The hub provides resources, tools and training to improve quality employment services.
We all have a role to play in ensuring people with disability can take part in all aspects of community life.
