Get Online Week(Opens in a new tab/window) encourages people to build digital skills, connect with others and make the most of opportunities online. Good Things Australia(Opens in a new tab/window) runs the campaign, which takes place in October each year.

We support Get Online Week(Opens in a new tab/window) through Be Connected event grants. In 2026, 545 organisations received grants of $1,000 to host local events, with more than 650 free events held across Australia.

The Older Women’s Network(Opens in a new tab/window) (OWN) received one of these grants. OWN has been part of the government-funded Be Connected program since 2018. Through our funding, OWN helps older women access technology and build the skills and confidence to use it.

As part of this year’s Get Online Week, OWN hosted a session on 22 October called Spot the Scam Before It Gets You.

The Minister for Social Services, the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, joined an enthusiastic group of older women from the local community at the OWN Wellness Centre in Sydney for the event.

The Minister led a scam awareness trivia session. Participants learned how to recognise common online scams and protect themselves. She talked about the importance of learning how to use technology safely, access essential services and maintain social connection.

About Be Connected

The Be Connected program helps older Australians develop the confidence and skills they need in a digital world. This enables them to stay connected with family, friends, services and their communities. The program has been running since 2017 and has delivered more than 3 million learning sessions.
