Implementation progress update
NSW Health is the main provider of sexual assault services in NSW, with services delivered in every Local Health District from over 50 locations in metropolitan, regional and rural areas across the state. This includes at least one service in every local health district providing 24/7 integrated psychosocial, medical and forensic crisis responses to adult and child sexual assault.
In response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Sexual Abuse, NSW Health has funded ongoing identified Aboriginal Sexual Assault Counsellor positions in all Local Health Districts and developed resources to assist in improving cultural safety and accessibility for Aboriginal victim-survivors of sexual assault. A Cultural Safety Roadmap, Cultural Safety Toolkit and Local Health District-led Aboriginal Action Plans provide strategic guidance and accountability mechanisms to ensure cultural safety and accessibility for Aboriginal victim-survivors, families and communities is a priority. Recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff is also a priority. NSW Health is also exploring appropriate ways for the statewide Aboriginal sexual assault workforce to be included in the broader NSW Health Aboriginal Family Wellbeing and Violence Prevention Program Network, which has robust Aboriginal-led leadership, qualification pathways, professional development opportunities and supports.
