Activity details
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) employs First Nations Police Liaison Officers (PLO) statewide, which assist the QPS to improve client services, prevent and reduce crime and maintain partnerships with First Nations communities by:
- liaising with First Nations communities to foster co-operation and understanding
- advising police officers on First Nations cultural beliefs, needs and protocols of the community in which they work
- identifying potential crime or disorder problems in First Nations communities and advising and assisting in prevention strategies
- establishing and maintaining communication between First Nations communities and police
- improving First Nations community access to policing services and referring to other services where necessary.
Implementation progress update
The QPS has a State PLO Coordination Unit to continuously explore and improve the scope of the PLO role. This includes:
- coordinating regular meetings for the PLO, Torres Strait Islander PLO (TSIPLO) and the Cross-Cultural Liaison Officer (CCLO) Networks to support and advocate for PLO development, recruitment, initial employment training courses, wellbeing and connections within the PLO, TSIPLO, and CCLO network within the QPS
- supporting and promote initiatives and engagement in First Nations and multicultural communities
- coordinating the state-wide PLO and TSIPLO conference to enhance PLO and CCLO professional development, community engagement strategy development and wellbeing of PLOs and CCLOs.
