Activity details
Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa delivers services to Martu men and women in Roebourne Regional Prison and Martu communities of the Western Desert east of Newman. Since 2023, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa has been supporting as Martu have continued to develop their culture based Martu Family Domestic Violence Strategy and women's Wangka Minyirrpa which provides cultural support, advice and direction to community members and local courts.
Martu women are driving a strategy that they want strong families, which includes their men being present and not in lock up. This strategy is being echoed by many of the men who are in lock-up. The narrative from Martu ensures the developing response is culturally driven and provides safety and strength for family units.
Martu women are empowered and supported to engage in this space and run workshops, inside and outside of Roebourne prison with their men, building the pillars of healthy relationships, which will lead to strong families.
Implementation progress update
The overall strategy and response are still in development but there is strong momentum within Martu circles.
