Explore creation of services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living with a disability who are in prison and have experienced domestic, family and/or sexual violence to ensure they can receive adequate disability diagnoses or treatment while in prison or detention, and to ensure they receive adequate assistance in transitioning out of the criminal justice system.
Implementation progress update
A permanent Disability Services Team was established within Queensland Corrective Services and commenced operations in October 2024. The team facilitates screening and assessment to better identify prisoners with disability needs and progresses National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) applications on behalf of prisoners, ensuring better access to essential support services upon their reintegration into the community.
