Activity details
The Western Australian Government is improving access to safe and stable housing for women and children escaping family and domestic violence through the delivery of new refuges in Perth, Katanning, and Leonora, continued support for Munda Mia, the expansion of existing facilities, and increased funding for all refuge and safe house providers. Where possible, refuges provide culturally responsive care and healing focused support for Aboriginal women and children impacted by violence.
Implementation progress update
Since 2017, crisis accommodation capacity for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence has increased by 40%. Building on this, a further 88 accommodation rooms or units are to be delivered over the next 4 years. Over the last 2 years, this has included the opening of 2 new refuges in the Perth metropolitan (Zonta and Ruah Community Services); continued funding for Munda Mia, a therapeutic intervention for women escaping violence with co-occurring alcohol and other drug issues; establishment of 2 new regional refuges in Katanning and Leonora; and the expansion of a number of existing refuges. All organisations providing refuge and safe houses services have also been supported through a funding uplift.
In 2025, the Department of Communities engaged ANROWS to undertake a Rapid Review of family and domestic violence safe accommodation options in Western Australia.
