Implementation progress update

Youth Justice NSW funds a number of Aboriginal-specific programs that allow young people to speak up and engage in cultural and healing interventions. Youth Justice NSW also funds a number of programs through community organisations. Funded programs include:

  • a casework support program through the South Coast Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation
  • the Wollundry Dreaming Hub in Wagga Wagga
  • Ngudjoong Billa delivered by the South Coast Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation
  • Safe Aboriginal Youth Programs in Wilcannia, Kempsey, Taree, Bourke, Newcastle and Dubbo
  • six Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations providing Youth on Track services
  • Aboriginal Legal Service to Youth Justice Centres
  • Aboriginal domestic and family violence family workers
  • funding Sydney Regional Aboriginal Corporation to deliver cultural and practical supports to young people in the Penrith.

Quarterly reporting from June 2024 to April 2025 on the Youth on Track programs shows that 73% of participants identify as Aboriginal. Of these, 76% of young people in the program have achieved their goals, 72% have engaged in pro-social activities and 68% have increased engagement at school or employment. These positive outcomes and increase in protective factors contribute to reducing risk of offending.
