Implementation progress update
NSW Health's Adult Survivor Program (ASP) aims to improve access to services and therapeutic care and prevent repeat crisis presentations for adult survivors of child sexual abuse, through provision of specialist trauma counselling and wrap-around, needs-based support. This includes integrated case management with mental health, drug and alcohol, Aboriginal health and community support services. Though not specifically targeted to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander survivors, the model emphasises the importance of working with and engaging Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations to make sure services are culturally safe. The use of Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Workers in the ASP has been trialled to see if this helps better support Aboriginal adult survivors with complex needs. A state-wide ASP Aboriginal Wellbeing, Trauma, and Healing Clinical Advisor has been established in 2025 to provide clinical advice, coordination and leadership on developing culturally safe and trauma-informed models of care with a particular focus on the APS, and other Violence, Abuse and Neglect services.
