The Western Australian Government’s Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy Western Australia 2021-2029 outlines a high-level framework for future government policies, plans, initiatives and programs that contribute to better outcomes for Aboriginal people, built around genuine partnerships and engagement with Aboriginal stakeholders, strong accountability, and culturally responsive ways of working.

Implementation progress update

The Aboriginal Empowerment Strategy (Strategy) is guided by 4 Strategic Elements: Culture at the Heart; Embedding Aboriginal empowerment into how we work; Investing in foundations and futures; and Walking together. The Strategy reflects a whole-of-government commitment to walking alongside Aboriginal communities, supporting self-determination, and creating safe and strong futures for Aboriginal individuals and families.

The Strategy emphasises the importance of investing in initiatives which build strengths and support Aboriginal families through prevention and early intervention, reducing the need for crisis responses. This includes improving the integration and coordination of services and ensuring responses are culturally safe.

By Placing Culture at the Heart, the Strategy aims to ensure government agencies and service providers are inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal people. This involves embedding cultural knowledge and practices into service design and delivery and significantly increasing the role of Aboriginal community-controlled organisations in leading and delivering services.
