Privacy Information

The Department of Social Services (DSS) is bound by the Privacy Act (1988) in relation to the collection and management of personal information. You can find more information about DSS’s privacy obligations and how it handles personal information by reading the DSS Privacy Policy. This includes information about how you can access and seek correction of your personal information, and how you can make a complaint about a breach of your privacy.

Personal information is information or an opinion, in any form, and whether true or not, about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable. This can include a person’s name or contact details, information about their foster care homes, or application forms that provide this type of personal information about a person.

DSS requests that no personal information is emailed to TILA@dss.gov.au. If personal information is received at TILA@dss.gov.au, DSS handles and stores that personal information in line with its Privacy Policy.

DSS can answer general questions about the TILA.

Your information may be collected, used and disclosed to or by DSS to respond to your contact, for the purposes of advising you of, or providing you with, promotional materials and activities, and undertaking consultation processes and surveys, research, evaluations, investigations or where you have agreed or it is required by or authorised under law.

DSS does not accept or process TILA Applications or leaving care plans, so it does not actively collect the personal information of young people who are eligible for, or recipients of, the TILA.

Any TILA applications and leaving care plans received by DSS will not be processed. TILA applications and leaving care plans should be sent to the appropriate TILA administrator.

Requests for TILA balances, including those that contain personal information of young people who are eligible for, or recipients of, the TILA will be forwarded to Services Australia at tila@servicesaustralia.gov.au and/or the relevant state or territory TILA contact for actioning. DSS may also request personal information from Services Australia about TILA balances.

All emails to the TILA mailbox that contain personal information, including TILA applications or leaving care plans will be deleted.

TILA applications are submitted via the Unified Government Gateway (UGG) portal by a registered worker in an approved organisation. To check if you have access to the UGG, contact your local state or territory government department or approved authority.
