A new National Disability Strategy - Latest News

Update from Senator the Hon Anne Ruston, Minister for Families and Social Services – progress on the development of the new National Disability Strategy

On 13 August 2021, I met with disability ministers from state and territory governments to discuss the new National Disability Strategy (the new Strategy). At the meeting, ministers agreed the new Strategy is ready to proceed for formal endorsement by all governments. Read the meeting communique.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in the public consultations on the new Strategy for your advice and input towards its development. We received feedback during consultations that there is some confusion between the National Disability Strategy (NDS) and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) because their titles are so similar.

I am pleased to announce disability ministers agreed to respond to your feedback by titling the new Strategy Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021-2031. The title change will mark a fresh start for the Strategy and what it means for all people with disability.

The new Strategy will be released later in 2021 once formally endorsed by all governments.

Senator the Hon Anne Ruston
Minister for Families and Social Services
