Volunteer Management Activity Summary

From 1 July 2021, the Department of Social Services (the department) began to distribute $33.5 million, over five years, to the state and territory volunteering peak bodies, through a closed non-competitive funding round, to administer the redesigned Volunteer Management Activity (VMA). The Commonwealth Government was only able to continue to fund volunteer management if the VMA was redesigned to align with a head of power under the Australian Constitution.

A further $6.6 million was provided through the 2021-22 Budget to support a smooth transition to the redesigned VMA during the first year.

The Commonwealth Government further invested a one off sum of  $3.4 million in 2020-21 to develop and improve volunteer management IT infrastructure.
