Before October 2020, the ILC grants program was managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The Local Area Coordinator (LAC) referral function helps connect people with disability to their community and services and remains the responsibility of the NDIA.

ILC grants and funding extensions 2020 to 2024
In October 2022, funding of $139.9 million was announced to extend 389 projects aimed at building the individual capacity and increasing the social, economic and community participation of people with disability.
This funding included projects focused on developing social connections for people with disability in rural and remote locations. Funding also supports organisations run by people with disability, for people with disability, to help them to improve their skills and confidence to achieve their goals.
Most projects due to cease between September 2022 and February 2023 have received funding until 30 June 2024. Read the full list of ILC Funded Activities Deemed Suitable for an Extension of Time and Additional Funding.
Individual Capacity Building
The Individual Capacity Building (ICB) program seeks to enable systemic, nationwide access to peer support, mentoring and other skills building for people with disability, their families and carers.
ICB 2019-20 grant round
On 13 December 2019, a combined total of $105.9 million was committed to 105 grants across Australia for activities over 3 years that assist people with disability, carers and families to access peer support, mentoring and other skills training. This grant round also focused on support for Disabled Peoples and Families Organisations through capacity-building activities.
Funded projects included:
- a social program for school-aged children
- skills training to organise and conduct meetings
- leadership and life skills training to become work ready.

ICB 2020-21 grant round
On 1 September 2020, the Australian Government announced the outcome of the ICB 2020-21 grants round, which opened on 11 March and closed on 6 May 2020. In this round, the Government invested $64.9 million in grants to 138 organisations to build the capacity of Australians with disability to participate in and contribute to the community.
Organisations across the disability sector who deliver life-changing projects for people with disability, their families and carers received grants of up to $500,000 per year for 2 years. Funded projects included:
- leadership courses to bridge skills gaps for people with disability
- workshops to build confidence to speak up in the community
- online hubs for signing up to social activities and groups.

Economic and Community Participation
Economic and Community Participation (ECP) focusses on improving pathways to employment and increasing participation by people with disability.
ECP 2019-20 grant round
On 21 February 2020, the results of the ECP grant opportunity were announced while the ILC program was under the NDIA. An investment of $32.7 million (GST inc.) in grants was awarded to 28 organisations across Australia, funding 3 years of activities.
Funded projects include:
- the facilitation of placements and work experience
- mentorship and peer developed training modules for people with disability to build workplace capacity.

ECP – Social and Community Participation (SCP) 2021-22 grant round
On 13 April 2021, the Australian Government announced the outcome of 2 grant rounds under the ECP 2021-22. In this round, the Government invested $19.3 million in grants to 136 organisations across Australia, to run projects to increase participation of people with disability in community activities under the SCP grant round.
Funded projects included improving accessibility to community and sporting activities for people with disability.

ECP – Economic Participation (EP) 2021-22 grant round
On 13 April 2021, the Australian Government announced the outcome of 2 grant rounds under the ECP 2021-22. In this round, the Government invested $17 million in grants to 36 organisations across Australia, to run projects to improve the employment prospects of people with under the EP grant round.
Funded projects included:
- on-the-job training for young people with disability in the hospitality industry
- providing practical assistance to break into the IT industry, trades and the arts.

Economic and Community Participation (ECP) – Building Employer Confidence in Disability and Inclusion (BEC) 2021-22 grant round
In October 2022, the outcome of the BEC grant round under the ECP program was announced. Grant funding of $20 million has been awarded to 29 organisations across Australia to increase the confidence of employers to hire and support people with disability.
Grants cover a broad range of disability types with projects aiming to:
- build the ability of employers to hire, support and retain employees with disability
- create inclusive workplaces by breaking down attitudinal barriers.

National Information Program
The National Information Program (NIP) focusses on providing information on supports and services to people with disability, their families and their carers through consistent national information programs and products.
NIP 2019-20 grant round
On 11 October 2019, the results of the NIP grant opportunity were announced while the ILC program was under the NDIA. An investment of $65 million (GST inc.) in grants was awarded to 37 organisations across Australia, funding 3 years of activities.
Funded projects included the creation of national online spaces to house information for people and/or children with disability, their families and carers. The spaces hold a range of resources including fact sheets, webinars and podcasts covering such subjects as work, study, sport, mental health, relationships and making informed choices.

Mainstream Capacity Building
Mainstream Capacity Building (MCB) focusses on improving the capacity of mainstream services to respond to and include people with disability, increasing accessibility and use of mainstream services.
MCB 2019-20 grant round
On 21 February 2020, the results of the MCB grant opportunity were announced while the ILC program was under NDIA. An investment of $35.1 million (GST inc.) in grants was awarded to 28 organisations across Australia, funding 3 years of activities.
Funded projects to improve communication between people with disability and health providers included training, multimedia resources and video scenarios to educate health professionals about disability.
