DSS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Strategy and Implementation Plan 2015-2018

The DSS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Strategy and Implementation Plan 2015-2018 (Workforce Strategy) seeks to improve the attraction, retention and career development outcomes of suitably skilled, motivated and committed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Workforce Strategy sets out actions to establish DSS as an employer of choice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as identifies ways DSS can be an exemplar in building a culturally inclusive environment.

The objectives of the Workforce Strategy have been designed to:

  • Attract and recruit – through the promotion of the Department as a workplace of choice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Retain and develop – by designing and implementing a framework to support the career development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, including through designating places for those staff on training and development programmes.
  • Build an inclusive cultural environment that leads by example – which will be achieved by identifying pathways that provide opportunities for meaningful contributions at work and encourage high levels of engagement.

This Strategy builds upon the previous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Strategy and complements our Department’s 2015-17 Reconciliation Action Plan. It has been developed through a comprehensive process of consultation, including endorsement by the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Staff National Committee.
