Transition to Independent Living Allowance

The Department of Social Services does not process TILA applications or leaving care plans. Please contact your local state or territory child protection office or TILA administrator for assistance with these items.

The Transition to Independent Living Allowance (TILA) is a one-off payment of up to $1,500 available to eligible young people.

TILA helps support young people aged between 15 to 25 years who are leaving or have already left formal or court ordered out-of-home care, transition to independent living. TILA is also for young people who continue to live with their non-parent carers after their care order expires.

The TILA payment can be used to buy items and services such as a fridge or couch, pay for counselling, education and training courses, medical expenses, a bond for accommodation, a drivers licence or any other eligible items or services agreed between the young person and their caseworker. The What can TILA be used for factsheet has more information on what TILA can be used for.

You can contact the TILA Team at TILA@dss.gov.au if you have any questions regarding TILA.

Select any of the boxes below to find out more on that topic, process or service.
