Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations

Key Elements

The Australian Government will deliver $11.2 million over one year to support increased teacher recruitment and retention by addressing the urgent need for teacher accommodation in the Northern Territory. The measure provides for the construction of 22 additional teacher houses in the Northern Territory prescribed communities. The Teacher Housing measure builds on the Commonwealth Governments existing commitment of $5.0 million for up to 10 new teacher houses in the Wadeye community.

This measure will contribute to improving education outcomes for Indigenous students.

The shortfall in teacher housing in the Northern Territory has impacted adversely on the recruitment and retention of teachers.

The Australian Government’s commitment under this proposal will provide 22 new houses and builds on its current commitment of $5.0 million in 2008-09 to construct up to 10 teacher houses in Wadeye.

The Australian Government will work in collaboration with Northern Territory education providers in the construction of these houses.
