Forced Adoptions Implementation Working Group

On 16 May 2013, Professor The Honourable Nahum Mushin’ was announced as the chair of the Australian Government’s Forced Adoptions Implementation Working Group.

The Department sought expressions of interest from people with an interest in the implementation of the Australian Government response to the recommendations of the Senate Community Affairs References Committee inquiry into forced adoption policies and practices.

A panel of  experts, including three Senators, was appointed to the Implementation Working Group to provide key advice to Government on services and projects to improve support for people who have been affected by forced adoption practices:

Professor Nahum Mushin (Chair)

Angela Barra (until 26 July 2013) – a Queensland adoptee, member of Origins Supporting People Separated by Adoption and Post Adoption Support Queensland.

Sue Boyce, Senator for Queensland, was a member of the Forced Adoptions Apology Reference Group.

Elizabeth Brew (until 3 October 2013) – a New South Wales mother and a member of the Forced Adoptions Apology Reference Group.

Christine Cole – a New South Wales mother, coordinator of the Apology Alliance, and a member of the Forced Adoptions Apology Reference Group.

Gary Coles – a Victorian Father, member of the Victorian Adoption Network for Information and Self Help, was a member of the Forced Adoptions Apology Reference Group.

Thomas Graham – an Australian Capital Territory adoptee and the editor of the Australian Journal of Adoption. Mr Graham also runs an Australian Capital Territory-based support group.

Leigh Hubbard – a Victorian adoptee, chairperson of the Victorian Adoption Network for Information and Self Help, was a member of the Forced Adoption Apology Reference Group.

Sue MacDonald – a Western Australian mother with extensive experience working alongside other forced adoption stakeholders.

Claire Moore – Senator for Queensland, was a member of the Forced Adoptions Apology Reference Group.

Kathryn Rendell – a Queensland mother, member of the National Council for Single Mothers and Their Children, was a member of the Forced Adoptions Apology Reference Group.

Evelyn Robinson – a South Australian mother who provides training to professionals through Post Adoption Support Services.

Kathie Scott (from 5 August 2013)  – a Queensland adoptee, member of the Technical Advisory Group for the national Research Study on the Service Response to Past Adoption Experiences.

Rachel Siewert - Senator for Western Australia, was a member of the Forced Adoptions Apology Reference Group.

Meetings of the Forced Adoptions Implementation Working Group

The first meeting of the Forced Adoptions Implementation Working Group was held on 9 July 2013. The second meeting was held on 31 October 2013. Summaries of the meeting outcomes are available at Forced Adoptions Implementation Working Group Communiqués.

The Terms of Reference and Protocols and Statement of Purpose for the Implementation Working Group were agreed to at the first meeting.
