Continuation of the Family Support Drought Response Teams Initiative

The 2009 Budget announced the continuation of the Family Support Drought Response Teams initiative for a further year until June 2010.

A total of $6.509 million will be provided to the 25 existing teams which are currently operating throughout Exceptional Circumstances (EC) regions across Australia to provide a ‘whole of family’ approach to counselling individuals, families and small businesses affected by drought.

A comprehensive suite of services is available including early intervention, crisis intervention, case management, outreach and home visiting services.

The teams of social workers, psychologists and community welfare workers will network and collaborate with other community services to ensure clients receive a more holistic and integrated range of family relationship services and these services will remain free of charge.

The focus of this model is on achieving greater outreach to isolated towns and individual farms particularly in remote areas such as Broken Hill, Mt Isa, Kalgoorlie and the SA Riverland.

It will also result in a more strength-based approach to support families in crisis where drug and alcohol abuse, family violence and mental illness are affecting relationships.

Funding agreements have been now negotiated with Family Support Drought Response Teams and funding has been allocated as follows:
