Mental Health

DSS helps to support Australians' mental health and wellbeing, through programs & services, benefits & payments, and grants for service providers.

Community Mental Health Activity

The Community Mental Health Activity commenced on 1 July 2014. Prior to this, community-based mental health services were funded through the Targeted Community Care Program.

Under this Activity, eligible organisations are funded to provide:

  • early intervention support to vulnerable families with children and young people who are showing early signs of, or are at risk of developing, mental illness
  • support for young people with mental illness to achieve and maintain participation in education and/or employment
  • support for carers of people with mental illness who have employment as a primary goal, and
  • support for the recovery of people with mental illness that includes drug and alcohol use disorders and/or gambling disorders.

See Programs & Services for more information.
