Workplace diversity recognises the value of individual differences and the importance of encouraging people from diverse backgrounds to join the Department. At DSS it’s all about fairness, equity, flexibility, respect and a safe and rewarding workplace.
Accepting diversity successfully creates a work environment in which the contributions of people with different backgrounds and experiences are drawn upon and valued.
At DSS, we value diversity and the contribution of people with different backgrounds and experiences. We advocate equal opportunity within the workplace, with specific focus on people with disability, women and Indigenous Australians.
Opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates
DSS strongly encourages applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates.
We recognise the richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the unique knowledge that Indigenous staff bring to our workplace, policy development and service delivery. Through the DSS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Strategy, we support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff through implementing mentoring, training and other career and development opportunities.
Opportunities for graduates with disability
We are committed to an inclusive work environment that enables people with disability to fully participate in all aspects of employment. We have a dedicated Disability Access Coordinator to support staff with disability as well as various support and mentoring programs and awareness training available for all staff.
We are one of the few Australian Public Service agencies to provide a centralised fund for equipment and additional support for staff with disability. This may include adjustments to facilities, equipment, communications or work methods.
DSS has a higher number of staff with disability than any other Australian Public Service (APS) agency – 5.27 per cent of our workforce identifies as a person with disability compared to the APS average of 3.1 per cent (based on the 2009–10 State of the Service report.) DSS maintains strong networks and support services to support staff with disability in their employment.
