Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Recruitment

Reconciliation Action Plan

We are committed to ‘closing the gap’ on Indigenous disadvantage, including Indigenous employment. DSS demonstrates this by providing a range of services and programs that acknowledge the cultural heritage, skills and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Champion

DSS has a dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Champion. The role of the Champion involves:

  • supporting the Department achieve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce and service delivery outcomes
  • representing DSS management and employees at major Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander internal and external celebrations/functions/forums
  • promoting support for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees
  • championing the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff within the executive and Senior Leadership Group.

The Department's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Strategy provides a framework for recruiting, developing and retaining Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.

We provide a range of services and support groups to Indigenous staff through the:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mentoring Program
  • access to DSS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Staff Network at both the National and State levels
