Closing the Gap for Indigenous Australians - Indigenous Emissions Trading

Key Elements

Indigenous communities can access support for activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.


Background

This $10 million element of the Government's $2.25 billion Caring for our Country initiative will:

  • support Indigenous land managers to engage with emerging emissions markets through awareness raising, local capacity building, and on-ground technical support; and
  • undertake research to improve scientific knowledge in Indigenous land management practices, develop accounting tools, and explore linkages to potential emissions reductions markets by Indigenous communities.

Indigenous Emissions Trading will have links to Working on Country and Indigenous Protected Areas, which are also elements of the Caring for our Country initiative.


Implementation

The measure will begin in July 2008 and will be jointly delivered by the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts and the Department of Climate Change.


Total Government Funding

$10 million over five years.
