State Seniors Card Holders - Withdraw the National Reciprocal Transport Concessions Offer

What's New?

Offers to state and territory governments to provide reciprocal transport concessions for State Seniors Card holders will be withdrawn.

Background

This measure was designed to allow State Seniors Card holders to travel on public transport at concessional rates outside their home state. Funding offers have been on the table with state and territory governments since 2002. However, three years of ongoing state and territory government objections have meant that no progress has been made, nor is ever likely to be made.
The Australian Government has recently introduced a range of direct benefits to seniors, including the Seniors Concession Allowance and Utilities Allowance. The direct benefits provided by the Australian Government are already delivering significant support to many senior Australians.

Implementation

1 July 2005.

Total Financial Impact

Net savings of $31.1 million over five years, including $5.8 million in 2004-05.
