Indigenous communities can access support for activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
This $10 million element of the Government's $2.25 billion Caring for our Country initiative will:
Indigenous Emissions Trading will have links to Working on Country and Indigenous Protected Areas, which are also elements of the Caring for our Country initiative.
- support Indigenous land managers to engage with emerging emissions markets through awareness raising, local capacity building, and on-ground technical support; and
- undertake research to improve scientific knowledge in Indigenous land management practices, develop accounting tools, and explore linkages to potential emissions reductions markets by Indigenous communities.
The measure will begin in July 2008 and will be jointly delivered by the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts and the Department of Climate Change.
$10 million over five years.
