Fraud and compliance - consistent assessment of Family Tax Benefit 

What's New?


The Australian Government will further develop the IT interface between Centrelink and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), to help ensure consistency between Family Tax Benefit (FTB) processing by Centrelink, Medicare Australia Offices, and the ATO.

Customers who have not completely proven their qualification for FTB payments will be identified through an automated IT interface between the ATO and Centrelink. These customers will be advised and invited to lodge qualification documents at Centrelink or Medicare Australia if they wish to receive FTB through the tax system in future years.

Background



The 2005-06 Budget approved a pilot study into the extent and reasons for incorrect payment in the FTB population. The results of this pilot showed that there were incorrect payments of FTB due to the failure to report correct residency, custody or marital status. This measure aims to reduce these incorrect payments.

Implementation:


1 July 2008.

Total Government Funding:


This measure is expected to lead to a reduction in incorrect payments of $45.0 million over three years.
