Family Assistance - Assistance to Families at Risk of Overpayment

What's New?

The Australian Government will increase the support to those families who have the most difficulty estimating their income. The Family Assistance Office will contact these families and provide them with additional assistance with income estimation as well as providing information sessions at local community venues about the family assistance system.

By improving understanding of entitlements and obligations this measure will benefit family assistance customers by reducing their risk of incurring an overpayment.

Background

Accurate income estimation is important, as families who choose to receive their Family Tax Benefit through fortnightly payments have their provisional annual entitlement worked out on the basis of their estimated income. After the end of the income year the estimated income is compared with the family's actual income. Families who have overestimated their income during the year and have been underpaid receive a 'top-up' payment at the end of the year. Families who have underestimated their income and have been overpaid are required to pay back the amount they were overpaid during the year.

Implementation

1 July 2005.

Total Government Funding

$8.5 million over three years (including $0.1 million in 2004-05).
