Compliance Reviews - Expand Data-Matching

What's New?

Centrelink's current data matching activities with employment records held by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) will be extended to generate an additional 25,000 reviews per year. Data matching with DEWR will identify customers who have not declared earnings after being placed in employment from a referral by a Job Network member.

The measure will improve the detection of incorrect payments and fraudulent claims by customers who do not declare income to Centrelink.

Background

The measure builds on the success of one of the elements of the 2000–01 Budget measure Compliance Strategy: Measures to improve Control of Incorrect Payment and Fraud–Detection.

People found to have failed to declare earnings will have their income support payments reduced or cancelled, and if an overpayment has occurred this will be recovered. This measure will ensure that incorrect payments can be promptly corrected, minimising the accumulation of large overpayments for affected customers.

Implementation

1 July 2004.

Total Financial Impact

Net saving of $59.2 million over four years.
